How Exactly Does a Quarter Auction Work?

Key Elements of a Quarter Auction

1. Participants:

   • Each participant purchases a numbered paddle (or paddles) for a small fee. Note: you can buy more than one paddle, the more paddles you have the high probability you have of the auctioneer selecting your number on the item you are bidding on.

   • The paddle corresponds to a number that will be used during the auction.

2. Auction Items:

   • Items are donated by sponsors, local businesses, or individuals.

   • Items can range from gift baskets and gift cards to home goods, services, or even bigger prizes.

3. Bidding System:

   • Each item is assigned a "quarter value," typically based on its retail price

How It Works

1. Auction Begins:

   • The auctioneer presents each item and announces its quarter value.

   • Participants decide if they want to bid on the item. If they do, they deposit the required number of quarters (e.g., 1–4 quarters) into collection bowls or buckets on their tables. Participants must deposit the required bid amount per paddle. If the bid amount is one quarter and you have four paddles that you would like to include in the bid you would need to deposit four quarters.

2. Paddle Numbers:

   • After depositing quarters, participants raise their paddles to signal they’re in the running for that item.

3. Drawing the Winner:

   • The auctioneer places numbered tokens (matching the paddles) into a bucket or bingo spinner and randomly selects a number.

   • If the drawn number corresponds to a paddle held by a participant who bid quarters, that person wins the item.

   • If the number belongs to someone who did not bid, another number is drawn until a winner is found.
